I sit alone

viaadmin Teen Talk, Volume 36

I sit alone, no one to talk to. No one to share my problems, no one to care. I’m lost. I don’t know where I’m going. Headed for destruction, my world will soon fall apart. Loneliness is my companion, my only friend. No light at the end of my tunnel — only dead ends. My grave is for one. I cannot escape loneliness.

Was this morbid piece of poetry written by a disillusioned old man at the end of a life of disappointments and sorrow? Not at all! It was published in a high school  newspaper and written by a Grade 12 student who appeared to be enjoying all the popularity, pleasures and so-called freedom that modern youth has to offer.

This cry of loneliness came from a girl whose world is full of people, noise and activity. She is not alone in her disillusionment of life. The heart-breaking number of suicides among teenagers, and the rampant use of mind-altering drugs to escape the emptiness of their lives is alarming.

But there is Someone who cares! Could I not introduce you to this Friend who has promised “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5)?

The Lord Jesus Christ is His name. Although living in Heaven in perfect harmony with His Father, God, we read that His “delights were with the sons of men” (Proverbs 8:31). He became a man so that He could be a Friend to understand, love and care for us. He not only lived for us, but He died for our sin that we might enjoy the consciousness of His presence each day on earth and be with Him eternally in Heaven.

Will you acknowledge your sinfulness before Him and accept His as your Lord and Saviour? Then what a comfort the words of the Apostle Peter would bring to your heart, “Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
